The Benefit of Doubt

Here is this week’s BioLogos post. Doubt is a normal part of the Christian faith. It is expected. But it is more than something we have to put up with. It is a gift from God to move us away from the shallowness of our own conceptions of God to grater depth and intimacy. The stress some feel in thinking through new and challenging issues, like evolution, may be God’s way of moving us out of our comfort zones.

I read your essay on Biologos when it came up, but I didn’t really appreciate its impact upon on me until I stumbled upon these posts by Dr. James Spiegel. What a stark contrast between his words and yours, and his articles just make me feel like abandoning Christianity all together. Anyways, in hindsight, thanks for the words of encouragement. I didn’t realize that Christians had such varied views on the causes of doubt.

Thanks for your comment. I read Spiegel’s post, and I would respectfully suggest that his approach contributes to the problem more than solves it. I understand where he is coming from, and several years ago would have shared his point of view, but too many life experiences have led me in another direction.
