The BioLogos Foundation is happy to announce that biblical scholar Pete Enns has joined our team as a senior fellow of biblical studies. Enns is an evangelical Christian scholar and author of several books and commentaries, including the popular Inspiration and Incarnation: Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament, which looks at three questions raised by biblical scholars that seem to threaten traditional views of Scripture. Enns has also been a contributor to our blog Science & the Sacred. His full biography can be found under “Team Members” in our “About Us” section.

BioLogos represents the harmony of science and faith. It addresses the central themes of science and religion and emphasizes the compatibility of Christian faith with scientific discoveries about the origins of the universe and life. To communicate this message to the general public and add to the ongoing dialog, The BioLogos Foundation created BioLogos.org.

You can get regular updates and links to resources from BioLogos by following them on Twitter (@BioLogosOrg) or by becoming a “fan” of their Facebook Page.

A Look at the Old Testament & Its Problems

A weekend seminar with DR. TREMPER LONGMAN III & DR. PETER ENNS

“How can we think of ancient mythology as the word of God?”

“Isn’t the God of the Old Testament nasty & vengeful? He’s not like Jesus at all!”

“The Old Testament simply can’t be trusted.”

“Modern science has made the biblical creation stories hopelessly out-of-date.”

“How can Christians make sense out of the Old Testament?”

Most of us have heard or said something along these lines. In this weekend seminar, Professors Tremper Longman and Peter Enns, two highly respected Old Testament scholars, will speak to some of the issues that surround reading the Hebrew Scriptures.

Designed for curious skeptics and for committed followers of Jesus—and everyone in between—this seminar is designed to give an honest and faithful look at the “problems” of the Old Testament.

Friday, October 9, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Saturday, October 10, 9:00 am – 12 noon
Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, and the author of over twenty books, including How to Read Genesis (InterVarsity) and Literary Approaches to Biblical Interpretation (Zondervan).

Professor Peter Enns (BA, Messiah; MDiv, Westminster; PhD, Harvard) is an in-demand scholar, writer, and speaker, who has taught for 20 years at both the graduate & undergraduate levels. His 2005 work, Inspiration & Incarnation (Baker Academic), was written to help those struggling with questions such as these.

The official release date, as I understand it, is October 3.

Previous to its release each author only saw his own essay, the other two essays, and his own responses. This is the first look we have had at how the other two scholars responded to our own essay.

Thus far, I have only been able to skim the book, but it is clear (not surprisingly) that there are some pretty sharp differences of opinion expressed. I think for this reason interested readers will find it a worthwhile volume for engaging this central hermeneutical issue. I know I have already appreciated the exchange.

A session will be devoted to this book at the national meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society this year in Providence, RI. All three authors will present their views. The session will be held on Wednesday, November 19, from 2:55 – 5:00.
